SGCC hot dip galvanized steel sheet is not a single universal steel grade. It describes a group of galvanized steel products where the underlying steel is selected for higher strength, hardness or resistance to mechanical damage. The exact properties therefore depend on the grade and production standard specified by the customer.

Base Steel Grade

For example, structural projects may specify a grade under ASTM, EN or GB standards, while machinery or wear-related applications may require a different material system altogether.

If a drawing specifies a particular grade, Sanhe Steel should supply according to that specification rather than replacing it with another grade that appears similar. Yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, chemical composition and impact properties can all vary between grades.

Product Specifications

Surface Quality

The galvanized surface can have a bright silver-gray or more matte appearance depending on the galvanizing process, coating characteristics and surface treatment.

For industrial applications, surface appearance is usually less important than coating continuity, coating thickness, dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties. If the plate is intended for architectural or visible applications, however, the customer should define the required surface appearance before production.

Minor variations in galvanized appearance do not necessarily indicate a problem with corrosion protection. The acceptance criteria should be based on the applicable galvanizing standard and inspection requirements.

Corrosion Resistance

One of the main reasons to select galvanized high-strength steel instead of untreated high-strength plate is the additional protection against atmospheric corrosion.

The zinc layer is particularly useful in outdoor structures, agricultural equipment, transportation components, storage facilities and industrial environments where the steel may encounter rain, condensation or humidity.

The actual service life depends heavily on the environment. Coastal salt exposure, industrial chemicals, continuous moisture and acidic or alkaline conditions can accelerate zinc consumption. Where severe corrosion is expected, the zinc coating specification or an additional protective coating system may need to be considered.

Wear and Impact Considerations

SGCC hot dip galvanized steel sheet can be useful when a component needs greater resistance to surface damage while also requiring corrosion protection. However, the product should not automatically be classified as a wear-resistant steel simply because it has higher hardness.

If the main working condition involves continuous abrasion from sand, rock, ore or other abrasive materials, grades specifically developed for wear resistance may provide better performance. In these situations, the customer should provide information about the abrasive material, impact level, operating temperature and expected service life.

This allows the supplier to distinguish between a high-strength galvanized structural plate and a genuinely wear-resistant galvanized steel solution.

Cutting and Processing

High-strength and SGCC hot dip galvanized steel sheet generally requires more attention during processing than conventional mild steel. Cutting speed, heat input, tooling selection and dimensional tolerance can all become important as hardness and thickness increase.

Quality control should cover both the steel substrate and the galvanized coating.

The base steel should be checked for grade, chemical composition and mechanical properties. Depending on the specification, this may include yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and hardness. The galvanized coating should be checked for coating thickness or mass, surface condition and continuity according to the applicable standard.

Dimensional inspection is also important for thicker plate because thickness, width, length and flatness affect fabrication and installation.

Q1: What is the difference between base thickness and total thickness for galvanized checker plate?

A: Base thickness is the thickness of carbon steel substrate, which decides load-bearing capacity. Zinc coating adds very little thickness. When you place order, you should specify base steel thickness instead of total measured thickness, to avoid receiving thinner substrate.

Q2: Will galvanized checker plate get rust?

A: Hot-dip galvanized layer provides long-term protection for base steel. If coating is scratched through mechanical impact, base steel at scratch point may rust. For coastal heavy salt-spray environment, we suggest choosing higher zinc coating weight such as Z275.
